2/26/2023 0 Comments Chess tactics art 3.0 softwareIn this way Blokh goes far beyond the usual catalog of mechanisms-fork, skewer, etc-to catalog many things that have no name. The simplified problems show me this mechanism in purified form, and ask me to apply it in the main problem, increasing my awareness of it. The simplified auxiliary problems that are proffered as hints emphasize this: when I can't solve a position it is often because I have really never noticed a certain mechanism. There is a study-like beauty in many problems one frequently becomes aware of the presence of a new and fascinating idea. All this induces a healthy paranoia and increases one's accuracy. Many of the positions are very double-edged, with somewhat insecure Kings playing a role, although the problems are not disproportionately mates. In Blokh's problems counterattacking themes occur frequently it's easy to slip fatally at the end of a variation. There is also, it seems to me, a distinctly Russian flavor to many of the problems, even those not featuring Russian players at least to my eye, they are markedly different from problems in books by American authors. Many problems feature patterns that are easily overlooked, yet not rare in practice. The problem choice seems to me to have been done masterrfully (but do note that most of the problems would be rated at least 1600 Standard here on CT, and many much, much higher). CT-Art, clearly a labor of love over many years for Blokh, reflects the judgments of a teacher and connoisseur about which problems are most instructive. The essential differences between CT-Art and CT stem from the origin of the problems. Most of the problems are taken from actual games and credit the participants maybe 10% are composed by Blokh, usually quite artfully. It is essentially an expanded software version of the famous tactics book "The Art of Combination" by Russian trainer and correspondence grandmaster Maxim Blokh, with some very nice features like the ability to play out variations against an engine, and hints for every problem in the form of simplified auxiliary problems. CT-Art is tactics training software sold by ChessOK (makers of Chess Assistant, which is similar to ChessBase).
